Description

It's hard to believe anyone would need that much real estate for a grave site, even if he did share it with his brother and a couple kids. The project is immense. The tomb, itself, which houses six coffins, is probably the size of a nice three-bedroom house and is surrounded by enormous grounds. Additionally, there are several satellite tombs, which don't contain coffins. The whole thing is flanked by a grand garden, complete with an enormous water feature with fountains.  All this for a couple corpses. Isn't life for the living?

Who was Humayun? He was born into power... birthright. He was king for a total of 11 years, during two separate reigns. After the first ten years, he lost his empire to the Afghanis. Fifteen years later, with the help of the Persians, he got the crown back. But that was short-lived, because the poor guy fell down the stairs and died a year later. His widow, out of her deep love and devotion, then had this tomb built as a testament to Humayun's greatness. That's the official narrative.

Humayun’s story is a little suspicious if you think about it. The guy loses his empire, barely gets it back after 10 years with the help of his friends, then just falls down the stairs and dies? Not exactly the stuff of legendary rulers. And then his old lady, instead of quietly moving on, builds this grand Taj Mahal prototype in his honor? Feels like a PR move - or maybe guilt.

It makes you wonder - was his death really an accident? What kind of emperor dies tripping on a staircase?
