Description

New Year’s Day on Tybee Island Bring in the New Year on Tybee Island. Not only is there a spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks show at the pier, but the festivities don’t stop there. For the past 20 years, New Year’s Day has featured the Tybee Island Polar Plunge and the Gang of Goofs Contest. The Gang of Goofs contest is located on Tybee Island pier. It starts at 11am on New Year’s Day. Groups of at least 3 or more dress up in outrageous costumes and parade in front of crowds of spectators and judges competing for some generous prizes, including a Tybee Island week-end getaway and, of course, the coveted first place trophy. Gang of Goofs contestants must also register for the Tybee Island Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge is, of course, a plunge into the frigid ocean. It occurs at noon on the beach besides the pier. There is a countdown; then hundreds of people throw caution to the wind and run headlong into the water together. The fee for all this is a modest $25.00, and you will even get a commemorative t-shirt. Furthermore, all proceeds go to benefit the Tybee Post Theater. The theater was built by the army in 1930 and, after having stood vacant for 20 years, was purchased by the Friends of Tybee. It is now in the process of being restored. While you’re on Tybee, take a tour of the historic Tybee Island lighthouse. Dating back to 1736, Tybee Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Georgia. And although it has been destroyed and rebuilt on more than one occasion, it and all the surrounding service building have been painstakingly restored to their 1916 versions. You can tour the lighthouse and even climb its 178 stairs. Stairs are staggered in groups of 25. So, take a rest. Walk around the outside and take in the view when you reach the top. In addition to Tybee's history, there's great dining there. One of my favorites is The Crab Shack, a charming spot, known for its seafood soups. The low country boil was some of the best I've ever had. The décor is unique. Dine inside or outside. It's a family friendly place. You won't find many franchise restaurants on Tybee. There are no Starbucks or Mc Donald's. If you want something quick and tasty, go to the Sugar Shack. It's a family run business. They serve a fantastic breakfast. There's also a tempting ice cream menu. Regardless of what you visit on Tybee Island, you'll guaranteed to have a unique and satisfying experience. And I bet you'll want to come back soon.

Hi. I enjoyed visiting Tybee Island in the summer months between 1973 and 1983. I remember crabbing under the pier posts. I remember their was more than one pier. I remember there was a giant water slide at the amusement park. The sun was always so strong at the beach. The riptide was strong but we really enjoyed swimming. A great place...
